Vietnamese coffee is a must-try for any coffee lover looking for something new and exciting!

Many people in the coffee world love Vietnamese Coffee because it tends to be strong and bold with very deep and complex flavor notes that can be simultaneously sweet, refreshing, savory, earthy, and smooth.

Vietnam has greatly increased its production of coffee in recent years and now produces more than Colombia. Vietnam ranks second in the world for the total volume of coffee exported, with some regions that yield a crop of High-Grade Specialty Coffee.

Coffee originally came to Vietnam in the mid-nineteenth century when French missionaries brought Arabica trees from the island of Bourbon and planted them around Tonkin. More recently, coffee has been re-introduced and the coffee industry is growing so rapidly that Vietnam is rapidly becoming one of the world's largest producers. Today, small plantations, located in the southern half of the country, produce mostly Robusta beans. With light acidity and mild body with good balance, it is frequently used for blending.

Great for your next favorite brew, whether served hot, cold, or blended with milk, sweetener, or creamer.

We’ve created a comprehensive buyer’s guide of Frequently Asked Questions to help you choose the best for your taste and flavor preference!

This guide will help you understand what to look for when choosing the Best Vietnamese Coffee Beans!

What Kind of Coffee Beans Are Used for Vietnamese Coffee?

The answer is mostly Robusta! This variety is well-suited for the climate and terrain of Vietnam, and it tends to produce a brew that's bold, nutty, and dark. While the Arabica species is also grown in some parts of the country, Robusta is the primary bean used in many Vietnamese coffee blends. Confusingly, cherry coffee is also known as "jackfruit coffee." These low-yield plants are not known for their quality and are generally planted simply to block the wind for Robusta coffee lots. Vietnam is the second largest coffee producer in the world.

Is Vietnamese Coffee Robusta or Arabica?

Vietnam is renowned for its Robusta beans, and they are the vast majority produced. But you might be surprised to know that they also grow Arabica beans on special, high-elevation farms. Visually, the two beans may look alike once they're roasted, but the difference lies in their taste, growing conditions, and price. Arabica beans are usually known to have a sweeter and fruitier taste, but due to the unsuitable growing conditions in Vietnam, a hybrid between the two, Catimor, was developed. This hybrid is thriving in Vietnam and holds incredible potential for top-quality coffee production.

What is Special About Vietnamese Coffee?

Vietnamese coffee is a true gem in the coffee world, thanks to the unique combination of factors that make it so special. The hot and humid climate of Vietnam plays a crucial role in determining the quality of the beans grown here, producing coffee beans that are low in acidity and high in natural sweetness. But it's not just the beans; the Phin filter brewing technique used in Vietnam produces a bold, intense cup of coffee that is imbued with complex flavor notes. With its rich, deep flavors and diverse range of taste sensations. Trung Nguyen, a premium blend, is a household name in the Vietnam coffee community.

Is Vietnamese Coffee The Strongest Coffee?

You've probably heard of Vietnamese coffee being touted as a "strong" contender. It's not just hype! Known for bold, robust beans and powerful taste, all thanks to the high caffeine content in Robusta beans, which have nearly twice the caffeine and are quite content of their Arabica counterparts. You're getting a serious caffeine kick with every brew!

Is Vietnamese Coffee Similar to Espresso?

Are you a fan of espresso but looking to switch things up with something new? While there are certainly differences between the two, Vietnamese coffee is a fantastic alternative when you're craving that rich, bold coffee flavor. In fact, many espresso blends use Vietnamese Robusta coffee due to its ability to provide that perfect crema and add depth to espresso-based drinks. You might just find your new favorite caffeine fix.

Is Vietnamese Coffee Healthy?

If you’re looking for a bold and smooth coffee option that is also good for your health, Vietnamese Robusta coffee may just be the answer. Thanks to its higher levels of chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant that can help lower blood pressure and body fat, Robusta coffee is a top choice for those who want to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee while also caring for their well-being. Your taste buds (and body) will thank you for it!

What Does Vietnamese Coffee Taste Like?

If you're looking for a flavorful cup of coffee, Vietnamese Arabica coffee beans might just do the trick! Medium-full-bodied is packed with notes of chocolate, vanilla, and caramel, giving it a rich and lively taste. You'll notice that it has a lower acidity level, which makes it the perfect choice for anyone who wants a smooth and easy-to-drink cup. Reminiscent of the local Nam coffee shop.

Is Vietnamese Coffee Bitter or Sweet?

This coffee is known for its intense strength and sweetness, making it a delightfully different experience. While traditional coffee is known to be bitter due to the Robusta bean used, fear not! Locals often drink it with sugar or condensed milk to cut through the bitterness and make a flavorful coffee.

What is the Best Brew Method for Vietnamese Coffee?

Vietnamese coffee is perfect for a variety of different brewing methods, so you're sure to find one that suits your preferences. Whether you prefer drip machines, pour-over, AeroPress, French press, or Moka pot, you can't go wrong with this coffee. Traditionally, a Phin is the best brew method for this delicious coffee!

What is the Best Roast for Vietnamese Coffee?

You know that the secret to Vietnamese coffee's deliciousness lies in the perfect roast. While light and medium roasts are popular with other types of beans, a dark roast profile is essential for bringing out the bold, nutty flavor of Vietnamese beans. This roast's strength and character are what make it capable of handling the addition of thick, syrupy condensed milk, a classic pairing that's been enjoyed for generations. While a light roast gives more body and leaves the natural mixture of this coffee bean's flavors more detectable.

What Grind is Best for Vietnamese Coffee?

You already know that getting the grounds right is key to making a delicious cup. Medium-coarse is the sweet spot when it comes to using a French Press. The fine grind may fall right through the holes and end up making a gritty cup. If you're using an espresso machine, opt for a finer grind. Once you find that perfect grind based on your brewing gear, a heavenly Vietnamese coffee is just a few steps away!

What is a Phin?

Vietnamese coffee is traditionally brewed in the Phin, a coffee filter used for centuries to make this unique beverage. This small filter is perfect for making a single serving of coffee, and it consists of four parts - a lid, a filter, a base, and a chamber. The process involves brewing the coffee using hot water and sweetened condensed milk, resulting in a rich, creamy, and flavorful cup of coffee. Be sure to get your hands on a Phin and taste the difference, just like the ones you will find in coffee shops.

What Can I Use to Brew a Vietnamese Coffee Instead of a Phin?

An alternative to the traditional Phin when brewing Vietnamese coffee there are a variety of methods you can use to achieve that perfect cup based on personal preference. For a clean and smooth experience, pour-over brewing is a great option. If you prefer a full-bodied and silky cup, the French press might be the way to go. Don't have either of those on hand? No problem! You can use a regular stovetop brewer or get creative with whatever method you have available.

How Does a Phin Work?

It's actually quite similar to an espresso portafilter, but instead of using pressure, gravity is the star of the show. Consists of a perforated plate that fits over a coffee cup, and a brewing chamber.

DIRECTIONS

1. 20g coffee (or 3 Tbsp)

2. 100g water (or 4oz water) at 200˚F

3. Pour hot water through an empty Phin

4. Discard water

5. Add coffee to Phin

6. Gently shake to even out coffee

7. Tamp coffee firmly, but don’t over tamp

8. Pour just enough water to soak the beans into the Phin and wait 10 seconds

9. Pour the remaining amount of water into Phin

10. Cap and wait

11. For traditional Vietnamese coffee, serve with 30g of condensed milk (Adjust to taste).
